At the Science Slam of the Kompetenzschule ELSYS, doctoral candidates doing research in Leipzig try to convince the audience of their projects in a ten minute presentation in a relatively safe environment and friendly atmosphere. The event is moderated and the most successful performer of the evening, elected by the audience will be honoured with the Golden Megaphone.
Providing a testing ground for young academics to advance public speaking and presentation skills
In the academic world, presenting is crucial to getting attention. While contents are evaluated according to specific criteria, the capabilities of making oneself understood and being entertaining are often neglected. Many societally relevant research projects are not widely perceived or discussed, because their relevance and potential conflicts are not successfully conveyed.
More and more, researchers have to convince and inform cooperation partners, financiers, media representatives as well as various publics. Communicating about complex scientific issues in generally comprehensible terms as well as via new forms and media, is not an integral part of daily working life for most of them.
Staging our show, we provide a testing ground for young academics to advance public speaking and presentation skills. Furthermore, we hope these evenings inspire the participants to new perspectives through immediate feedback and the doctoral students in general to courageous approaches.
Covering the full range of topics
Enhancing interest and curiosity, doctoral students of all disciplines and all kinds of research topics are welcomed. And all imaginable ways of presenting are allowed.
The Kompetenzschule ELSYS offers rhetoric and communication training for free.
